During the nineteenth century Britain peaked at her power and was able to fend off all European encroachment, through the grey steel walls of the mighty Royal Navy. British industry secured a commanding lead over competitors and its position as a trading nation was supreme. In spite of vast number of technical advances, Hanoverian and later Victorian society was still unenlightened. It remained class-conscious, with the middle and working classes struggling for political as well as economic power. Squalor and disease coupled with ferocious penalties for the most trivial of offences continued to hold sway until reform movements belatedly removed some of the worst abuses. The simple aim of this book is to concentrate on the main points of those who made a difference during the ever changing industrial age of Great Britain and her Empire during the 19th Century. Here I have opted to do something entirely different. Give you the reader a clear and precise understanding of the lives of many British personalities without the need for greater detail. Selected are the greatest Britons that made a difference in Britain and the British Empire. This book deals with those that shaped the century - from great painters, social reformers, politicians, scientists to military and writers.

The "Great Captains" frequently looked to crucial battles to learn lessons that they themselves employed. While the battles of antiquity have often been examined, Western generals looked to the wars of the Greeks and the Romans, the Chinese to their own campaigns, and so on. In this volume, Gabriel and Boose examine 31 wars, battles, or campaigns from Megiddo (1479 B.C.) to the fall of Constantinople (A.D. 1453) that had the greatest impact on the ancient world, stretching from the Mediterranean through the Middle East to Japan and Korea.
