The Rowman & Littlefield Guide for Peer Tutors introduces college students to the field of peer tutoring, providing a theoretical background and practical guidance for peer tutors in higher education. Taking an innovative approach firmly grounded in the science of learning and cognition, the text guides college students in thinking critically about their work as educators and in making informed choices in working with learners. A vibrant, engaging read, the text covers topics essential for all peer tutors, across writing, mathematics, the sciences, languages, and other disciplines: the brain-based reality of learning, active and collaborative pedagogies, the role of learning centers in colleges and universities, models for tutoring, the transition to college, metacognition, study strategies, online environments, and much more. An ideal supporting text for both tutor training programs and courses for peer educators, this book provides support for learning and writing center administrators in welcoming college students to the field of peer-led learning and for tutors in the work of acting as guides and mentors to the fields of inquiry that exist within the academy.

The Tutoring Revolution presents a comprehensive research-driven perspective on what we know and don't know about tutoring. The authors link theories, research, and practice together in a coherent, consistent manner to form a new foundation of specific recommendations and strategies to help improve tutoring across America. The book includes practical guidelines for selecting a tutor and proposes ethical and regulatory tutoring standards for use by tutors and state agencies. It will be useful to educators, researchers, and parents. If a true tutoring revolution is to benefit American education, their participation will be essential to further research on effective tutoring and improve consumer safeguards.

Bridging the Chasm Between Research and Practice: A Guide to Major Educational Research is written for anyone concerned about the education of the 48 million children in elementary and secondary schools in the United States. Obviously, a large number of parents, teachers, legislators, school board members, and taxpayers have a keen interest in these children's education since it costs $8,000 per year to educate a single child in the U.S. Unfortunately, there is a chasm between the educational researchers who do the science and the general public. The chasm exists because educational researchers publish their findings in low circulation, stuffy, academic journals that are rarely read by anyone outside the research community. Bridging the Chasm Between Research and Practice is a bridge across the research-practice chasm. It is the first serious effort to thoroughly explain education science to the layperson in an understandable and conversational manner. The accumulated body of knowledge on the following critical topics is simply and thoughtfully explained: grade retention, dropouts, radical differences in children rearing practices, remedial programs that work, class size, school size, high stakes testing, and graduation tests. The vast implications of this research are also discussed.

In this resource for educators, Harold F. Burks offers a comprehensive guide to the evaluation techniques and intervention strategies that have worked with many school children experiencing problems. Thus, Diagnosis and Remediation Practices for Troubled School Children attempts to: clarify the understanding of observed, unwanted child behavior symptoms (whether they be physical, intellectual, academic or social in nature); investigate with educators and parents--and sometimes children--the possible causal factors that antedate these behavior manifestations; create in cooperation with parents and school personnel, innovative intervention techniques to help children learn accepted behavior patterns. The methods outlined in the book are intended for teachers, principals, school psychologists, school nurses, guidance personnel, and persons in related professions such as social workers, clinical psychologists and psychiatrists. It is assumed the readers will have acquired a rudimentary knowledge of psychological dynamics (acquired through college courses) in the areas of diagnostic methods, aberrant behavior, personality theory, learning disorders, special education, and counseling techniques. This book is appropriate for use in graduate courses concerned with child exceptionality and psychopathology.
