This thesis uses the narrative genre of climate fiction as a mode of critique in the 2019 blockbuster science fiction film Wandering Earth to consider how it deals with eco-optimism. I started considering the speculative aspect of climate fiction, a subgenre of science fiction, as a discursive site when I encountered an institutional subset of the art world that engages with environmental activism and design, that relies on “real-world” specificities yet materially overlook their relation to systems around them. When Wandering Earth was released in theatres, popular discussion around the film curiously revealed similar attitudes. Wandering Earth doesn’t take the “stance” of standard cli-fi narratives—the responsibility for the earth is due to “sun-induced” climate change, not human-induced climate change. The film operates in a similar way to how some of these artists and designers think. I use climate fiction’s formal ambiguity and flexibility as critical framework for what doesn’t neatly belong under climate fiction, but perhaps relies on it. By colliding climate fiction with fictionalized climates, I hope to demonstrate the possibilities of differentiated interpretation using climate fiction as a genre of critique.
